A New Responsibility

By cathrynblue

Remember when I said this was going to be a peaceful, restful semester? Well, I messed that up pretty quick. It’s really not that bad, but I always tend to find ways to fill my schedule, no matter how much free time I think I have.

Like, I’m now the Graduate Student Association’s representative for the entire psychology department. Usually, the position opens up, a few people apply for it, and one is voted in by his or her colleagues. Often, the most popular kid wins and I certainly didn’t think I had that much of a high profile. Well, I went up for the position just to see what would happen, not really thinking that I was going to be chosen. Low and behold, I got the job. I’m not disappointed, but a little flabbergasted, hoping that I won’t be kicking myself halfway through the semester.

Being a GSA representative is not that much of a time commitment. It just comes with a lot of responsibility. I’m the one everyone comes to with their problems. I’m also the one who signs everyone’s paperwork. Furthermore, as a representative, it’s in good taste to participate in all of the department’s events. So now, not only do I have to go to the department “meet and greet,” but I also have to dress up for it.

It sounds like I’m complaining, but I’m not. I’m really glad to have the position. It’s another great resume booster that will improve my image within the department. If anything interesting comes up, like conferences, job opportunities or scholarships, I’ll be one of the first to know.
